Street Lamp

A proposal for Sydenham District

  • What you learned at school counts.
  • What you learned at work counts.
  • What you taught yourself counts.
  • What you learned from your family counts.
  • What life taught you counts.

Bring us what you’ve got. We’ll help turn it into a crack at a different future.

The idea

Your CV is the trailer, not the film

A job title tells you where someone works. It doesn’t tell you what they can do.

Plenty of people around Sydenham fix things, build things, sell things, translate for their family, run the books for a mate’s business or know far too much about one very specific thing. None of it shows up on paper. A lot of it is worth money.

Sydenham already has capability. The question is what we haven’t spotted, connected or put to use yet.

Street Lamp would

  1. 01Find what people can actually do
  2. 02Check it holds up
  3. 03Connect people who’d be stronger together
  4. 04Test the idea against real demand
  5. 05Help what survives become real work

What counts

Not anti-school. Just not school-only.

Qualifications and licences count where they matter. Street Lamp adds everything else.

School

Degrees, certificates, tickets and licences.

Work

What the job actually taught you, not just the title.

Self-taught

The stuff you learned at 2am because you couldn’t let it go.

Family

The repair, cooking, selling, sewing or negotiating someone passed down to you.

Life

What you learned the hard way, and can now do better than most.

What do people always call you for?

What did your family teach you to do?

What do you know far too much about?

What are you proud you can do?

How it works

Ask. Check. Connect. Test.

Tell us what you can do

Online, by phone or in person. You don’t need to be good with computers, and you choose what to share.

Show it

Where a skill could lead somewhere, we test it properly with work samples, demos, references or a qualified assessor. That’s what makes it count with employers and customers.

Get connected

To employers, mentors, trainers, businesses, or other locals whose skills fit with yours.

Test it for real

Cheap, quick tests before anyone spends serious money: talk to customers, check the rules, run the numbers, try a small sale. If an idea doesn’t hold up, we say so early.

Make it real

A job, a contract, training, a partnership or a business, whichever fits. Nobody gets pushed into starting a company.

Capability collisions

Three or four people. One idea nobody saw coming.

Some skills get far more interesting side by side. Street Lamp puts them together and finds out what they could become.

Unpublished writer + after-hours illustrator + someone who learned voices making his nan laugh

Might be: an animation or character studio. First test: make 60 seconds and see if an audience cares.

3D-printing guru + sauce-obsessed chef + technical-drawing nerd + content creator

Might be: a kitchen product. Print it, break it in real kitchens, fix it, then see if people will pay.

Garment-pattern elder + CAD user + streetwear obsessive + small-run manufacturer

Might be: a digital pattern archive, a specialist pattern service or a new product line.

Appliance-parts savant + bargain hunter + coder + ex-appliance salesperson

Might be: a tool that makes repairing cheaper and easier than replacing.

Horror-film obsessive + makeup artist + carpenter + sensor coder

Might be: an experience studio: installations, escape rooms, seasonal attractions.

Local bird nerd + drone mapper + GIS analyst + sensor builder

Might be: environmental monitoring for councils, land managers and developers.

Examples, not promises. Street Lamp doesn’t declare the answer. It creates the collision, checks the skills, tests the idea and finds out what it can become.

Who it’s for

One front door

Adults living in Sydenham District, with priority for people aged 18 to 35. Older residents with something useful to bring are welcome too.

Young people coming out of youth justice can come in through the same door as everyone else. Any extra support is arranged quietly with the right services. Nobody’s history goes on display, and it doesn’t set the ceiling on what we explore.

Taking part never depends on supporting me, voting for me or joining a mailing list.

What it isn’t

Let’s be clear

  • A jobs board
  • Gig work
  • A promise that everyone should start a business
  • A shortcut around licences, checks or qualifications
  • An MP pretending to be an employment agency or a venture fund

Your information

Yours. Full stop.

A program like this only works if people trust it. These are the rules.

  • You choose what you share, and we only collect what we need.
  • You say yes separately to each use: matching, introductions, research, or telling your story.
  • Your details are never added to campaign contact lists.
  • No public, searchable database of people.
  • No computer scoring you or quietly rejecting you. A person reviews every important match.
  • You can correct, download or delete your information.

If elected

What I’d actually do

An MP can’t hand out jobs. What an MP can do is get the right people in a room and open doors that are hard to open alone.

Remove the stupid barriers. Keep the market test.

  • Bring together employers, trainers, councils, mentors, youth services and local businesses.
  • Make the introductions someone without the right contacts would struggle to get on their own.
  • Push to fix the rules and barriers that block good local ideas.
  • Find community, philanthropic and business partners to cover setup costs, like registration, first-year bookkeeping and a mentor, for ideas that pass the test.
  • Publish the results, including what didn’t work.

The proposed pilot

Start small. Show the receipts.

100–150: Sydenham District residents

12 months: 6 to discover, 6 to follow through

10–15: real-world market tests

Quarterly: public scoreboard, wins and fails

These are design targets, not results. They depend on funding and delivery partners, and no organisation has been confirmed as a partner yet. The pilot covers the Sydenham District electorate as set by the Victorian Electoral Commission, not just the suburb of Sydenham.

Sydenham, what can you do that never made it onto your CV?

Bring us what you’ve got. Let’s find out what it could become.

Street Lamp. Step into the light.
